Mitchell Brownstein easily won a second term on Cote St. luc council in Sunday night's election, in which he fought his first full-scale campaign. Mr. Brownstein, who was acclaimed in 1990, was elected this time with 1,064 votes, about 78 percent of the vote, to lawyer Donald Davis's 425. When the tabulations began in the city hall auditorium, it was immediately evident the councillor's victory would be convincing.

"I'm ecstatic," Mr. Brownstein said near his newly opened campaign office at Cavendish Mall, the centre of election activity in Cote St.Luc. "I think it was a terrific campaign. It's thanks to all my supporters, my family and friends who worked really hard with me, and most particularly, the residents who showed clearly that they are satisfied with my performance, that I've been there for them."

"Mr. Davis had an honourable campaign and it was a pleasure running the campaign as his opponent", the councillor added.

"This year, (the campaign) was much more exciting, with the thrill of victory and going through the whole campaign and winning with the knowledge that you received the endorsement of your people, that they said yes, we want you to be our representative rather than being acclaimed. There's a different kind of feeling about it, but it's the same result, you end up doing the same job with the same type of commitments towards your constituents."

Asked what constituents told him during the campaign, he said, "that I was there for people whenever they called and, in the vast majority of cases, I was able to solve constituent's problems wherever they existed. They were also pleased with the acts I participated in, on a larger scale such as organizing events for the city."

Concerning the mayoral race, "a lot of people were satisfied with the work the mayor has done, and a lot of people were satisfied with Dida Berku's performance as a city councillor in the last four years and felt they had enough confidence in electing her as mayor."
