Dear Mr. Brownstein:

In light of your company's active interest in the Asia-Pacific region, the Honourable Raymond Chan, Secretary of State (Asia-Pacific) has asked me to write to advise you that he will visit China and Hong Kong in early May.

In China he will travel to the cities of Beijing, Dalian, Jinan, Shanghai, Fuzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong as part of the ongoing commitment of the Canadian Government to build upon the achievements of the Team Canada visit to China in November 1994 and the return visit of the Chinese Premier to Canada in October of last year.

Canada's two-way trade with China and Hong Kong exceeded $11 billion in 1995. Canadian exports alone to China and Hong Kong increased by almost 50 percent and impressive accomplishment by any yardstick. The Secretary of State (Asia-Pacific) and the China Division of this Department look forward to continuing to work closely with you and the Canadian business community to further promote our common interests in the Greater China market.

Yours sincerely,

Colin Russel
Director
China Division
Asia and Pacific Branch
